Forgery allegations against Călin Georgescu

”We have notified the criminal investigation bodies regarding the commission of the offense of forgery of documents, provided for by Article 292 of the Criminal Code, by Mr. Călin Georgescu, in the context of the collection of more than 239,000 signatures that he officially submitted on October 1, 2024, to the Central Electoral Bureau, as an annex to his candidate file, for the presidential elections of November-December 2024. The complaint is based on the contradictory statements of Mr. Călin Georgescu, who, on the one hand, publicly claimed that in order to collect more than 239,000 signatures he was supported by over ten thousand volunteers, and on the other hand, both in official candidate documents and in public statements, claimed that he had zero costs, on the occasion of the presidential election, Round 1, of November 24, 2024”, announces Remus Pricopie on Facebook.

Concerns over fraudulent signatures in the Presidential race

”I believe that such fraudulent practices undermine the foundations of democracy and the trust of citizens in the electoral process, which is why I have decided to refer this case to the competent judicial bodies as well. Unfortunately, this phenomenon of fraudulent signatures of support for a presidential candidate has become widespread. In the last few days, the press has presented a number of worrying reports about the crude and fraudulent way in which certain candidates have decided to obtain these signatures. Also, the Central Electoral Office itself has, in recent days, referred to the Public Prosecutor’s Office suspicions of fraud in relation to the files of two candidates, Sebastian-Constantin Popescu and John-Ion Banu-Muscel, who, despite these referrals, will be on the ballot paper for the elections on May 4, 2025. The public must find out whether Mr. Călin Georgescu has fraudulently entered an electoral contest that he tried to manipulate in order to win the position of President of Romania”, Pricopie concludes.
