Romanian president Traian Basescu said Tuesday evening in an interview for the public TV network TVR that Romania supports the Republic of Moldova in its endeavor to join the European Union.

Basescu said Moldova wants to join the European Union and he had a discussion with Moldovan president Vladimir Voronin on the subject.
Basescu added Romania supports speeding up procedures bringing Moldova closer to the EU.
"We want to see Moldova’s European perspectives in an official EU document," Basescu said.
The head of state announced at the end of the most recent European council meeting that the president of France, country which currently holds the presidency of the European Union, said Moldova’s European perspective will be on the working agenda at the next council meeting.
