In reply, the members of the “Association 21 December”, which includes participants in the Romanian Revolution, asked the High Council of Magistrates to intervene and stop the project.
The draft act proposes “amnesty and absolution from responsibility of all acts committed during the Revolution of December 1989, acts based on constitutional provisions, military oath and regulation valid at the time, regardless the penalties stipulated by law or enforced by legal courts.”
The act would grant pardon to all military personnel, including the ones tried and sentenced for their actions during the Revolution.
The “Association 21 December” demanded the High Council of Magistrates would stop the project, thus defending the prosecutors’ reputation and independence.
Romania’s Ministry of Defense received a similar draft act back in 2006, which was vigorously contested by the revolutionaries.
