The company also said 80% of construction works on the road sector connecting the towns Campia Turzii and Gilau have already been completed.

Bechtel is also working on the road sector Suplacu de Barcau-Bors, namely on 23 work points located between kilometers 13 and 30, as well as on the viaduct in Suplacu de Barcau, the largest viaduct included in the construction project, where the company already started to mount U-type girders.

Construction works on the highway started in 2004, based on a contract worth EUR2.2 billion attributed to Bechtel. Works halted mid-2005 when Romanian authorities started looking into contracts concluded under the previous government. The highway is due for completion in 2013.

Under a protocol concluded in February this year between Romania’s Transport Ministry and Bechtel, the latter committed to finalize this year 42 kilometers of the road sector Campia Turzii – Gilau, as well as the viaduct on the sector Suplacu de Barcau – Bors.

Mid-May this year, Prime Minister Emil Boc assured that road sector Campia Turzii- Gilau will be completed by the end of 2009. He said EUR119 million has been assigned this year to the Transylvania Highway and that funds to complete the respective sector are stipulated by the state budget.

The Romanian authorities allocated EUR700 million for Transylvania Highway during 2007-2008, of which some EUR380 million was distributed in 2008.

The Transport Ministry will pay Bechtel this year EUR420 million, based on the protocol they signed.
