Romanian, Syrian Presidents Talked About Runaway Terrorist Omar Hayssam

Romanian President Traian Basescu said Monday after a meeting with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad that talks included Syrian business man Omar Hayssam, tried and convicted in Romania for terrorism and thought to be hiding in Syria.

Asked whether Romania and Syria would sign an agreement in the justice sector, Basescu said “I understand the hint, we talked about Omar Hayssam”.

Basescu Monday started his official visit to Syria with a meeting with his Syrian counter part.

Also Monday, Basescu will meet with representatives of the Romanian community in Syria, and also has meetings scheduled with the head of the Syrian Parliament and the head of the Council of Ministers.

The Romanian head of state will have talks Tuesday with the leaders of the Syrian Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry.

In 2007, a Romanian court found Hayssam guilty of masterminding the kidnapping of three Romanian journalists in Iraq in 2005, and sentenced him in absentia to 20 years in prison.
