Romanian Border Police Seizes 60,000 Packs Of Contraband Cigarettes

Border police in Nadlac, in Romania’s western county of Arad, seized Thursday night this year’s biggest contraband cigarette transport. Police found 57,460 packs of cigarettes hidden in a truck going to Switzerland.

The cigarettes were hidden in the truck that was transporting couches from Arad to a company in Switzerland, according to its transport documents.
 
The cigarettes, 50,000 packs of which had no fiscal stamps, were assessed at some 350,000 lei (EUR1=RON3.6422). the cigarettes would have been worth five times more on the black market in Switzerland, which hosts the Euro 2008 football championship starting Saturday.
 
The truck driver, a 25 year-old Romanian, said he knew nothing of the cigarettes he was transporting. He was fined RON10,000 and the investigation is ongoing.
