Committee chairman Gyorgy Frunda said the bill has no legal basis in Romanian or EU legislation.

The bill also obliges people holding public office to undergo annual medical check-ups in order to keep their positions.

The Government does not support the bill, arguing that forcing presidential and MP candidates to take psychological and psychiatric examinations violates their privacy.

The committee for public administration, territorial organization and environment protection will draft the report that will be debated in a plenary Senate session. The final decision belongs to the Chamber of Deputies.
