Romanian Liberals Understood They Were Wrong To Vote In Favor Of Teachers’ Wage Hike – PM

Romanian liberal lawmakers, including education minister Cristian Adomnitei, understood they were wrong to vote Tuesday in favor of the 50% increase in teachers’ wages, as the measure is financially unsustainable, Prime Minister Calin Tariceanu said Saturday.

Tariceanu said the education minister ought to have kept the same position he expressed in Parliament until the time of voting.

“Now the episode has ended. There is a position of solidarity at a government level and no other minister can afford to have a different attitude, nor has there been an attempt of this kind. He realizes he has made a mistake. I think he made a mistake, and this puts an end to the matter,” he said.

Tariceanu said the other liberal lawmakers made a mistake by voting in favor of the wage hike.

“Yes, of course they were wrong, and they admitted that. Some of the liberal leaders are aware of that and have the courage to admit it,” he added.

When asked whether the liberals consulted before voting on this measure, Tariceanu answered there had been an emotional atmosphere which overwhelmed all lawmakers.

The Romanian Government decided to inform the Constitutional Court on a possible conflict between the Government and Parliament sparked by the adoption of the law stipulating a 50% hike in teachers’ wages, following the meeting between Tariceanu and the ministers concerned by the matter.
