ICJ Decision Allows Romania To Start Exploiting Oil Resources In Black Sea

The ministry reiterated Romania’s position to observe the Court ruling, which is final, binding and without appeal.

 

Romania’s position was defended professionally, using all available arguments and evidence, the ministry said.

 

The International Court of Justice in The Hague ruled Tuesday in the dispute between Romania and Ukraine on maritime delimitation in the Black Sea and established a single boundary delimiting the continental shelf and exclusive economic zones of each country.

 

The decision the Court recognizes Romania’s sovereign jurisdiction and sovereign rights for a continental shelf and exclusive economic zone of 9,700 square kilometers, that is 79.34% of the disputed area.

 

The ruling ends a 40 year-old dispute between Romania and the former USSR and later Ukraine.
