Romania 2010 Wheat Output At 5.7M Tons, Below Expectations

Romanian Agriculture Minister Mihail Dumitru Friday estimated the country’s wheat production will reach 5.7 million tons in 2010, below forecasts but more than enough to meet domestic consumption requirements.

"We have the necessary quantity for the bread and bakery sector, namely 3.5 million tons of wheat," Dumitru said, adding the quality of the harvested wheat is yet to be determined.

The authorities estimated total wheat production would reach 6.7 million tons in 2010, but the crops were severely damaged by floods.

In 2009, Romanian wheat output was 5.2 million tons.
