In 2004, the European Union launched the Single European Sky (SES), a program aimed to create an integrated airspace.

The agreement between Romania and Bulgaria, which sets up the Danube FAB, was signed during a meeting of the Council of EU Transport Ministers.

Nazare said in a press release passengers will benefit from shorter-distance flights once the functional airspace block is implemented, and airlines are expected to reduce fares.
