According to the press release, the National Fund of Health Insurance was allotted extra 604,500 lei (EUR1=RON4.2808) or EUR140,000 collected from the 132 fines applied between June 7 and June 11 for irregularities in releasing medical leave certificates.
A total of 85 Romanians lost their social security benefits for the leave period, as they breached the new conditions regarding medical leave.
Following checkups made by health insurance authorities, 150 medical leave certificates were rejected as groundless, and doctors were held responsible for 65 of the cases. About 122 doctors received warnings and problems concerning 19 other doctors were brought to the attention of the Doctors' College disciplinary committees.
Romania's Health Minister Cseke Attila said the money collected from fines will be used to ensure treatment for patients who suffer from chronic diseases.
The Romanian Government decided on April 14 to tighten conditions for employees who can request medical leave and will introduce a verification system and a higher penalty for people demanding such leaves without reason.
The health minister highlighted that people tasked with checking if employees on medical leave are at the address mentioned in their affidavits are forbidden to enter employees' homes.
