Romania Could Become SE Europe's Energy Mkt Hub - Hidroelectrica Chief
Romania has the chance to become an energy market hub in southeastern Europe, but it might miss this opportunity if it fails to make clear investment decisions on the production units' upgrade, Wednesday said Mihai David, general manager of Romanian hydropower producer Hidroelectrica.

"Europe expects us to provide energy supply security in the region, they are counting on us. We have no business on the German or Italian markets. (…) We are wasting months in a row talking about shutting down pollutant power producers, but time is not on our side," David told a conference on energy issues.
According to the Hidroelectrica official, Romania currently has only one upgraded energy group, while the other thermal power plants are outfitted with technology from the '60s.
"These thermal power producers need to be replaced, but do we have anything to replace them with? People expect us to have a European attitude. (…) We need to be careful when we say we're supporting a segment, and see how much we do so and to what end," David added.
Furthermore, according to David, EU state governments, as well as the European Commission, need to calculate precisely the investments that energy producers have to perform in order to upgrade their units and reduce pollution.
