“Resorting to modern technology in the voting process is no longer a thing of the distant future, but of the present. We should all harmonize our voting systems to make electronic voting a reality. We will probably be able to introduce this type of voting and use new technologies at the next round of elections,” David said.
The minister said the system would require voters to be electronically identified, which entails that Romania should introduce electronic ID cards or other forms of identification.
David added Romanians living abroad might be the first to benefit from the electronic system of voting.
“I think we’ll be able to introduce electronic voting for Romanians abroad by the next round of elections. It’s hard to imagine we’d be able to introduce the system in Romania that soon," he explained.
David attended Thursday the annual meeting of the Association for Eastern and Central European Official Elections (ACEELO) and presented the attributions of each public structure involved in ensuring an equitable and exact voting procedure.
