Romania Could Only Be Sanctioned With Lack Of Recognition Of Court Decisions In EU - Min

The German Parliament (Bundestag) intends to cease the allocation of European funds for Romania, citing lack of performance in the justice system, Deutsche Welle Romania reported Friday, citing news agency DPA.

German MPs have complained about the slow pace of reforms in Romania’s justice system and the state of the fight against corruption, and a commission on Thursday unanimously adopted a resolution asking the European Union to cut funds destined for Romania.

"The only sanction stipulated formally for a potential slowdown in performance within the Mechanism for Cooperation and Verification is applying the article 38 of Romania’s EU accession act, which refers to the lack of recognition of Romanian court rulings in EU member states, a clause that can be activated until the end of this year, but the signal drawn by the Bundestag should be regarded carefully,” Predoiu said.

The minister said the German lawmakers’ message indicates how much pressure there is in the adoption of a firm and severe attitude in the evaluation of Romania’s progress in the field of justice.

"We believe, however, that Romania has made enough progress in the field of justice to allow us to argue against sanctions,” Predoiu said, adding the Justice Ministry is on schedule with its institutional reform targets.

The European Commission will issue in July this year its monitoring report on Romania’s justice system.
