The proposal for a mission was officially presented by the United Kingdom on Tuesday, in the EU Council’s Politic and Security Committee. According to an EU diplomat quoted by the two publications, Denmark, the Netherlands, Romania, Sweden, Spain and Italy are the member states who announced that they will assess a possible participation in the mission.
The initiative already received support from France, while Germany also announced that it is in contact with Paris and Berlin on its possible contribution.
The Iranian Revolutionary Guard announced on Friday that it captured a British oil rig, on suspicions that it violated the “international naval code”, incident which was vehemently criticized by the UK and the US.
The measure was seen as a response to an incident which happened several weeks ago, when the British Navy captured an oil rig suspected of transporting Iranian oil to Syria, in violation of US and EU sanctions.
Tensions between Iran and the West grew in the past 18 months, after the United States decided to withdraw from a Nuclear Agreement with Tehran. Last month, Iran shot down a US military drone which it accused of violating its air space, which nearly led to retaliatory measures from Washington.
