The deputies’ education committee amended article 75 of the education law, which said that parents and legal guardians who fail to school their children throughout the compulsory school years will be fined RON100-RON1,000.

The amendment was initiated by liberal democrat deputy Catalin Croitoru, endorsed by opposition deputies and voted against by the other democrat liberal deputies.

Democrat liberal deputy Mariana Chircu told MEDIAFAX that her fellow party members found the fine proposed by Croitoru too high for struggling families.

The education committee also decided that the fines and community work will be enforced by local or county authorities.

The education committee will continue to debate the 300-article education law draft.
