According to the report, press freedom in Romania is similar to the one in Poland, South Korea and Mauritius.

Aside from Canada and New Zeeland, the first 20 positions in the world press freedom index are held by European countries.

“Outside Europe – in which the top 14 countries are located – no region of the world has been spared censorship or violence towards journalists,” the media rights group said.

In addition, none of the EU27 states ranked below the 60th place.

War conflicts triggered a sharp decrease of media freedom in Georgia and Niger, the report noted.
