Italian authorities officially confirmed Tuesday that a Romanian family of three died in the powerful earthquake in central Italy early Monday, which raised the death toll among Romanian citizens to four, a press release of Romania’s Foreign Ministry read.

The ministry said the death toll is likely to rise as rescue crews keep clawing through the debris of fallen homes. It also stressed that the Romanian Embassy to Rome is constantly in touch with local authorities and provides thorough information concerning Romanian citizens in quake-hit areas.
The ministry added that, as soon as rescue operations have been completed and Italian authorities have authorized the transfer of victims’ bodies to Romania, the Embassy would provide assistance as much as possible.
According to the ministry, nine Romanian citizens left the earthquake area Tuesday morning and requested the Embassy’s support to return to Romania.
Italian authorities also confirmed Tuesday the death of a Romanian woman.
According to latest data, more than 179 people died and 34 were reported missing in the deadly quake centered near L'Aquila, about 70 miles northeast of Rome.
The quake hit 26 towns and cities around L'Aquila. Castelnuovo, a hamlet of about 300 people southeast of L'Aquila, appeared hard hit with five confirmed dead. The town of Onno, population 250, was almost leveled.
