Romania To Finish ROP Contracts Two Yrs Ahead 2013 Deadline – Min

Romania’s Development Ministry plans to finish signing the contracts financed through the Regional Operational Program (ROP) by end 2011, two years ahead the deadline imposed by the EU, to avoid possible application problems, Minister Vasile Blaga said Wednesday.

“Although the deadline to sign the financing contracts is December 31 2013, we intend to finish the operation by December 31 2011, because we might encounter more than a few problems in implementing the projects,” Blaga told a press conference.

On Wednesday, Blaga has signed two contracts worth total EUR31.54 million for road upgrades.

Following the approval of these two contracts, Romania exceeded the level of EUR1 billion in ROP financing, calculated at an exchange rate of 4.2 lei against the euro.

“Starting with January 1, we have managed to register contracts worth average EUR25 million per week,” Blaga said.

He restated that the ministry plans to sign additional ROP contracts worth another EUR1 billion by the end of the year.

The payments’ value, however, stands at only EUR71 million so far, Blaga mentioned. He said he hopes the payments will be more significant in the second half of the year.

Some EUR4.4 billion are to be used between 2007 and 2013 to finance, through the Regional Operational Program, the urban development, the modernization of roads, of the infrastructure within social services, health, or education domains, the development of the business environment and of Romania’s tourism.

EU funds represent 84% of the total financing, while the rest is financed through national funds.
