End May, Environment Minister Nicolae Nemirschi said he will recommend the two new measures be included in the second stage of the “Junk Car” program which started June 1.

Romania will allocate 106,156.800 lei (EUR1-RON4.1928) to replace nearly 28,000 jalopies in the second stage of the car scrap program, which will end on August 31.

As to the first stage of the program, Nemirschi said it accomplished its goal and, in fact, it helped the automotive industry, which saw an overall drop on the year of some 50% in the first four months.

Some 12,064 out of the 20,000 cars allocated were sold in the first stage of the car renewal program.

Companies might be allowed to participate in the program as well, but only in the third stage, which will be launched September 1, Nemirschi added.
