Romania’s Natural Gas Consumption Fell 15% In 2009

Natural gas consumption in Romania dropped last year by 15%, to 140 million MWh (13.2 billion cubic meters), according to data released Monday by the country's energy watchdog ANRE.

In 2008, Romania’s gas consumption was at 165 million MWh, or 15.5 billion cubic meters, ANRE data shows.

State-owned gas producer Romgaz ensured 50.71% of Romania’s gas output in 2009, namely 5.78 billion cubic meters. The country’s largest oil company OMV Petrom (SNP.RO) ensured 46.88% of the gas production.

In December 2009, the gas consumption was 19.4 million MWh, up 9% on the year, with imports covering about 3 million MWh, almost double from December 2008.

The imported gas price was at $299 per 1,000 cubic meters in December, down from $493/1,000 cubic meters in January. The lowest price of the imported gas during 2009 was in September, at $269/1,000 cubic meters, according to ANRE data.
