US secretary of state Hillary Clinton said Friday in Washington, after meeting with Romanian Foreign Minister Cristian Diaconescu, that Romania is one of the USA’s most dependable allies and most respected partners, according to a Foreign Ministry statement.

Minister Diaconescu met Friday with United States secretary of state Hillary Clinton in the first bilateral meeting since the inauguration of the new Democrat administration in the White House.
Towards the end of the meeting, Diaconescu said it was an opportunity to reconfirm the strategic partnership between Romania and the United States.
“We agreed together that the Black Sea and Eastern Europe are areas of great potential for democratic and economic development in the future. And I can tell you that United States together with Romania will work hard in order to address democracy values, in order to respect standards, and to engage in projects for stability and security of these regions,” the Romanian Foreign Minister said, according to the statement.
“We also addressed the issue of how we are going to work together to facilitate reciprocal travel for our citizens through Romania’s inclusion in Visa Waiver Program,” the Foreign Minister added.
He also noted that the discussions on aspects of priority interest in the bilateral relationship focused on the strengthening the economic component of the bilateral strategic partnership.
The talks included topic such as energy security projects of great importance to both countries and cooperation in operation threatres in Afghanistan and Iraq, where “Romania proved readiness and willingness to assume our shared responsibility, also in the future in support of freedom and democratic developments which together with United States, we hope to be fulfilled as soon as possible,” the Romanian Foreign Minister said.
The US secretary of state mentioned the longstanding collective work on global security priorities and expressed her appreciation for Romania’s commitment to missions in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Kosovo. Hillary Clinton also thanked Romania for its decision to host joint military exercises with the U.S. military.
“Romania is one of our most dependable allies and most respected partners. The agreements signed today represent yet another facet of our close and valuable relationship,” Clinton said in conclusion, according to the Ministry statement.
