Romania Is The Largest New Car Mkt In Central, Eastern Europe – Study

The number of new cars sold on the Romanian market hiked by 23.1% in the first nine months of the year, to 228,877 units, pushing Romania to the top position in the hierarchy of the largest auto markets in central and eastern Europe, according to a study compiled by the company Jato Dynamics.

Poland is ranked second, with 217,412 cars sold at the nine month marker, up 24% on the similar period in 2006, accompanied by Hungary, with 128,958 units commercialized, down 5.9%, according to data from the research company.

For the entire region, new car sales climbed, in the interval between January and September, by 14%, to 981,052 units.

Regarding the third quarter, Romania is still ranked first in the central and eastern European area, with a 20.5% climb in new car sales, compared to the similar period in 2006, to 82,585 units.

The most sold model in the region was Dacia Logan, with 76,924 units commercialized in the first nine months, down 5.1% on the similar period in the previous year. Logan is followed by Skoda Fabia, with 58,920 units sold (-14%), Skoda Octavia , with 49,510 units (+5,9%), Opel Astra, with 24,797 units (+22%) and Ford Focus, with 23,036 units (+20,1%).

Also, Dacia took second place in the chart of auto brands in central and eastern Europe at the nine month marker, with sales totaling 76,925 new cars, but it was the only brand that registered a drop, of 5.1%, in the number of units sold in the mentioned period. The top position in the chart went to Skoda, with 121,867 units sold, slightly up on the similar period in 2006, while Opel ranked third, with 75,948 units sold, 19% more than in 2006.
