Staicu on Monday was sentenced to seven years in prison for accessory to abuse of office for his role in the bankruptcy of the International Bank of Religions (BIR). The ruling is final.
The chief of the Romanian Police, Liviu Popa, said Staicu is suspected of having left the country on Sunday and may have boarded a flight from Hungary. Staicu, who legally took his wife's last name, Nutu, was only issued a new ID card and not a passport.
"We'll catch him and bring him back to the country," said the chief of police.
Staicu's name change was approved on April 1 but authorities were only informed of the change on April 6, upon searching the national database.
