However, used car registrations went up 8.1% on the year to 152,620 units, the ministry's license and car registration division said.

On the month, new car registrations plummeted 71.8% to 8,591 units in August, while used car registrations dropped 58.9% to 12,080 units.

Dacia, made locally by French Renault's unit Dacia Automobile SA, was the best-traded brand in August with 3,204 units, down 57.8% on the year.

In 2008, new car registrations in Romania were down 8.6% on the year to 285,500 units, while used car registrations rose 150% on the year to a record level of over 300,000 units.
