"We reiterate the appeal addressed the EU member states for more unitary approach in speeding up Nabucco pipeline project. The European Commission and the EU member states should deploy more efforts to overcome any political and technical obstacles, including through a more rapid signup of the inter-governmental Agreement, and ensuring real contract partnerships with gas providers in Caucasus and Central Asia(…), " Basescu added.

Also, Basescu added that any misbalance in an EU states mirrors in all the member states, including Romania.

Basescu calls for a diversification of the electric power energy sources in order to boost the setting up of an European energy market and to prevent any attempt of using energy as a political instrument, which further influences any political decision at state or EU-level.

The setting up of an energy market is a prerequisite for reducing the EU’s energy dependence on a sole supplier.

Nabucco pipeline project is aimed to supply natural gas from the Caspian Sea to Central Europe via Turkey and Romania, bypassing Russia.

The pipeline is a project of a consortium lead by Austria’s OMV and is expected to become operational by 2011-2012.

The six companies in the consortium are Austria’s OMV AG (OMV.VI), Hungary’s MOL Nyrt. (MOL.BU), Romania’s Transgaz (TGN.RO), Bulgaria’s Bulgargaz, Turkish BOTAS and Germany’s RWE AG (RWEOY).

All the members of Nabucco consortium have had talks with producers in the Caspian zone to negotiate the gas acquisition but none of them signed a contract yet.
