Romania places last in the European Union by companies’ access to the internet, way behind other EU states, as only 58% of companies in Romania use the internet, according to the data provided by the European statistical office Eurostat.

To conduct the study, Eurostat used 2006 data for Romania.
The companies with the highest access to the internet are located in Finland (99%), Slovakia (98%), Belgium, Denmark and Austria (97%) – based on the data collected in January 2007 – and Holland (97%, based on 2006 data).
Beside Romania, only five countries go below 90%, namely Bulgaria (75%), Latvia and Hungary (86%), Cyprus (88%) and Lithuania (89%).
As regards the companies operating in EU states, 94% of them had access to the internet in January 2007, compared with 92% early 2006.
Moreover, Romania places last in EU in what concerns the access to a fast connection to the internet (31%), and the number of companies having their own websites (24%).
Finland also places first in EU by companies’ access to a fast connection to the internet, holding a 91% weight, followed by Spain (90%), Malta (89%) and Sweden (87%). The EU average reached 77%.
Early 2007, 65% of EU companies had their own websites. The highest number of companies having their own websites was reported in Sweden (85%), Denmark (84%) and Finland (81%), while Romania and Bulgaria with 31%, as well as Latvia with 39%, are among the last.
