Romania Might Change Position In Kosovo Matter – Official

“Romania has expressed its opinion with respect to the Kosovo matter. Depending on how things evolve in Europe, the country might change its stand, if it so considers fit,” said Degeratu during the international conference “Regional security, energy security and NATO: future problems and answers.”

He also reiterated that Romanian troops will not be pulled out of Kosovo as the mission is a humanitarian one and aims to ensure security for civilians under a United Nations mandate.

Degeratu sees the  NATO summit to take place in Bucharest in April as “a good time to find peaceful solutions to the Kosovo problem.”

On Sunday, Kosovo declared its independence from Serbia, ending a long chapter in the bloody break-up of Yugoslavia.

On Monday evening, Romania’s parliament adopted a Declaration stating Romania does not recognize independent Kosovo. The decision was approved with 357 votes in favor and 27 against.

Romania’s president Traian Basescu also said the country would not recognize the independence of Kosovo arguing this breaks Serbia’s territorial integrity.
