Romanian President Traian Basescu called Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi saying Romania could host 200 Tunisian immigrants, according to a statement published Wednesday on the Italian government’s website.

During the cordial telephone conversation the Romanian president, expressing his country's solidarity with Italy regarding the crisis triggered by the massive flow of immigrants from Northern Africa, said Romania offers to host 200 Tunisian immigrants, the statement reads.
Berlusconi expressed his appreciation of Romania's symbolic gesture of friendship and solidarity.
Confronted with a wave of immigrants from Tunisia following the ousting of the regime of president Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, Italy has repeatedly called for European solidarity.
At least 20,000 Tunisians have fled to Italy since the beginning of the year.
