“A mission from the European Department is coming end-January for what we call a «staff visit», not for discussion of a potential arrangement,” Ansola said.

He added this is a regular visit in between annual consultations to assess the economic situation and discuss policies with the new government, and there is no program discussion on the mission’s agenda.

“Only the government can request to have discussions on a program, and it has not done so,” Ansola stated.

IMF’s representatives most recent visited in Bucharest last year, between 3 and 14 of November, together with World Bank representatives, in order to assess Romania’s financial system.

The last stand-by agreement between Romania and IMF was formally closed on July 7, 2006.
