Romania qualified Saturday in the quarterfinals of the 2007 Women’s Handball World Championship in France , in Group II, after it beat Spain 32-19 (19-6).
Romania Qualifies In 2007 Women’s Handball World Championship Quarterfinals
Romania still has to play two matches in Group II: with Hungary on Sunday and Germany on Tuesday, but with six points secured, it cannot miss qualifying in the quarterfinals. The first four teams qualified from each Group go to the quarterfinals.
After Saturday’s matches, Romania is group leader (6 points), followed by Germany (5), Hungary (4), South Korea (2), Spain (1) and Poland (0).
Saturday’s results in the World Championship:
Group I – Macedonia-France 23-29, Croatia-Angola 28-34. The match between Norway and Russia is also scheduled Saturday.
Group II – Germany-Hungary 30-30, Poland-South Korea 33-37, Romania-Spain 32-19.
The winner of the World Championship qualifies automatically for the Olympic Games in Beijing, while teams ranking second through seventh go to pre-qualifying tournaments to be hosted by winners of the second, third and fourth places.
Romania’s objective in the Women’s Handball World Championship in France is securing one of the top four spots.
