Romania Ranked Fourth Globally By Internet Connection Speed For Q4, 2009
Romania ranked fourth globally by average Internet connection speed for the final quarter of 2009, which edged up to 7.2 MBps, 28% faster than in the final quarter of 2008, says the “State of the Internet Report” published Tuesday by digital platform company Akamai.

According to the report, Romania recorded the sharpest increase out of all top ten countries, both on the year and compared to the third quarter of 2009. Romania's average speed for the final three months of 2009 was 14% higher, compared to that recorded in the second quarter of last year.
Latvia recorded the second sharpest increase for the final quarter of 2009, but its average connection speed was 6.2 MBps.
Globally, the average connection speed dropped by 2.7% on the year and 1.2% on the quarter, to 1.7 MBps.
Although South Korea topped the Akamai chart, with an average connection speed of 11.7 MBps, the country also reported the sharpest drop, with 29% on the year and 24% on the quarter. Hong Kong and Japan occupied the chart's second and third position, respectively.
During the final quarter of 2009, 93 countries reported connection speeds under 1 MBps, compared to 103 countries during the year's third quarter. Only three countries recorded speeds below 100 KBps, less than half the number recorded from June-September 2009.
