Romania Ranks 63 Globally In UN Human Development Index

Romania is ranked among countries with a high level of human development this year, at 63, but is three spots lower than last year, when it was ranked 60 in the annual United Nations Human Development Index report released Monday.

The index compiled by the UN Development Program (UNDP) ranks 182 countries based on such criteria as life expectancy, literacy, school enrolment and gross domestic product (GDP) per capita.

Countries ranked 1 to 70 are considered to have a high level of human development, countries ranked 71 to 155 have a medium level of human development and the rest have a low level of human development.

According to the index, Norway is the most attractive country, whereas Niger has the worst performance. The 2009 UN Development Index is based on data from 2007.

Norway, Australia, and Iceland are the places with the best living standards, whereas Afghanistan and Sierra Leone are at the bottom of the ranking together with Niger.

Romania is ranked 63, with an index of 0.837 points, slightly up from 0.813 points last year.

Life expectancy in Romania has increased to 72.5 years from 71.9 years and the GDP per capita in terms of purchasing power parity is at $12,369. Romania's adult literacy rate was at 97.6 % and school enrollment at 79.2% from 76.8% in the previous report.

Bulgaria, at 61, outranks Romania and Slovenia, at 29, is the best ranked in Eastern Europe, followed by the Czech Republic at 36, Estonia at 40, Poland at 41, Slovakia at 42 and Hungary at 43.
