The Legatum Prosperity Index ranking is "based upon the very foundations of prosperity, those factors that will help drive economic growth and produce happy citizens over the long term," notes the Legatum Institute, which is part of a Dubai-based investment group. The index considers a variety of factors including wealth, economic growth, personal wellbeing, and quality of life.
Romania is ranked at 51, between Kazakhstan and Thailand, while neighbors Bulgaria and Hungary are ranked 46 and 34, respectively.
The top ten most prosperous countries in 2010 are Norway, Denmark, Finland, Australia, New Zeeland, Sweden, Canada, Switzerland, the Netherlands and the United States.
The best ranked central-eastern European state to join the EU after 2004 is Slovenia, which came in at 21. The Czech Republic ranks 24 and Poland 29.
The Baltic states, Croatia, Slovakia, Uruguay, Argentina, Malaysia, Brazil and Saudi Arabia are above Romania in the 2010 Prosperity Index ranking.
The low end of the ranking features Pakistan and Zimbabwe as the world's least prosperous countries.
