Romania is ranked seventh in a world chart of spam source countries, while Bucharest ranks eighth in a chart of the world’s top spam source cities, according to a study compiled by computer security company PandaLabs for the first two months of 2010.

Romania Ranks Seventh In World’s Top Spammers Chart – Study

According to the chart, Romania is the source for 2.53% of the world's spam, while Bucharest is the source for 1% of the world's spam.

At the same time, 3.42% of spam message generating IPs are registered in Romania.

The most important source of spam on a world level is Brazil, with 13.76% of messages and 8.6% of IPs, followed by India (10.98% of spam and 8.6% of IPs), and South Korea (6.32% of spam and 4% of IPs).

The top spam source cities are Seoul (4.64%), Hanoi (3.99%), New Delhi (1.67%), Bogota (1.33%), Sao paolo (1.19%), Bombay (1.13%), Bangkok (1.08) and Bucharest (1%).

In the unfolding of the study, PandaLabs analyzed five million spam emails, coming from one million different IPs.

Spam messages are mostly used for the distribution of malware or the sale of illegal products.

In the first three months of 2009, a similar study by PandaLabs pointed to Romania as the third most important source of spam in the world, with a share of 5.8% of the overall amount of spam on a world level. At that time, the top two positions were held by the U.S. (11.61%) and Brazil (11.5%).
