A Romanian delegation formed of two Foreign Ministry officials left for Baghdad end last week to provide technical assistance in view of potential talks to extend Romanian military presence in Iraq after December 31, the ministry said Tuesday.
More officials might join the Romanian delegation to Baghdad, based on further development of the talks in the Iraqi Parliament, the ministry told MEDIAFAX.
On Monday, the Romanian Parliament approved President Traian Basescu’s request to maintain Romanian troops in Iraq in 2009, while related financing for staff and equipment will be settled by a later government decision.
Basescu sent a letter to Parliament Monday requiring its consent to keep Romanian troops in Iraq after the existing legal mandate expires end year.
"Romania, following its undertaken commitments, will continue in 2009 to participate with troops in missions outside national borders in operation theaters in the
Balkans and Afghanistan, within actions under the coordination of the United Nations, the European Union and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe,” the letter said.
