„Romania remains strongly committed to carry out its mission in Afghanistan and is closely analyzing the requests of military commanders in Afghanistan to increase the number of troops from NATO member states in the region,” Basescu said at a meeting in Brussels with NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen, adding „Romania will be ready to do that whenever the other NATO allies are ready.”

Basescu stressed Romania is closely analyzing the possibility of increasing its participation in Afghanistan, „especially with military staff able to provide warfare training to the Afghan National Army, as well as with active troops.”

In turn, Rasmussen highlighted the need for a strong military mission in Afghanistan, with main focus on advanced warfare training of the Afghan military forces to further hand over security responsibilities onto Afghan military and police forces.

Rasmussen also welcomed Romania’s commitments to NATO and its contribution to NATO’s military operations.
