Romania Recognizes South Sudan Independence
Romania welcomes the Republic of South Sudan's declaration of independence and recognizes the state as sovereign and independent, says a press release by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The ministry congratulated Sudan and South Sudan for the implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement and stated it is confident the two states will maintain friendly and neighborly relations.
The United States, the United Kingdom and France recognized South Sudan on Saturday, immediately after the new state declared its independence, says AFP. The declaration comes after more than 50 years of war between separatists in the south and the governments in Khartoum, a conflict that has devastated the region and claimed millions of lives. A peace agreement signed in 2005 ended the longest conflict in Africa and paved the way for a referendum on secession, in January 2011.
