Romania Ups Penalties For Early Retirement To 45% From 30%

Romanian Labor Minister Mihai Seitan said Thursday the country's new pension law increases penalties for early retirement to 45% from 30%, adding the number of people taking early retirement pensions has tripled since 2001.

Seitan said it is not unusual for people who retire earlier to be penalized, adding states like Germany apply such sanctions for life.

„Under Romanian law, people are sanctioned only until they meet the retirement age. We increased the sanction to 45% from a maximum 30%,” Seitan said.

Romanian Prime Minister Emil Boc said Monday that, although the legal retirement age is of 63 years for men and 58 years for women, the real average retirement age is of 54 mainly due to early retirements, adding the pension system risks to become unsustainable if this situation continues.

Boc said, after the Government approved the draft pension law, the normative act does away with disability pensions obtained illegally and early retirement pensions.
