Romania’s trade deficit was at EUR1.99 billion in the first quarter, significantly lower than EUR5.09 billion in the same period a year earlier, the National Statistics Institute reported Monday.

In the first quarter, exports were at EUR6.56 billion, down 19.4% compared with the same period a year before, while imports fell 35.4% on the year, to EUR8.56 billion.
In March alone, Romania’s trade deficit was EUR566.1 million, 73% lower than in the same period a year ago.
In March, exports were at EUR2.55 billion, down 6.9% compared with the same period a year before, while imports fell 35.3% on the year, to EUR3.12 billion.
Exports are calculated exclusive of costs, insurance and freight fees, but imports are calculated including such costs.
Romania’s trade deficit was up 3.4% in 2008 to EUR22.5 billion, from EUR21.7 billion in 2007, but exports grew last year at a higher pace than imports.
