Social democrat leader Mircea Geoana said Tuesday evening that Aurescu deserves acknowledgment on behalf of the Romanian state due to his efforts in the trial against Ukraine, and can be “an excellent solution” for the position of state secretary with the Foreign Affairs Ministry.
Aurescu was appointed agent at the International Court of Justice in 2004, when Romania notified the Court on the Black Sea maritime delimitation dispute. He took part between 2001 and 2004 in the negotiations with Ukraine on the issue before the notification of the Court, and also had the role of delegation chief or assistant of the delegation chief.
Aurescu was Romania’s agent with the European Court of Human Rights and President of the Romanian Branch of the International Law Association. He was chief cabinet of the Foreign Affairs minister, has led the judicial department and also has filled the positions of subsecretary and state secretary for European Affairs with Romania’s Foreign Affairs Ministry.
He is member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration and substitute member of the Venice Commission.
He has been nominated by Foreign Affairs Minister Cristian Diaconescu to fill the state secretary position with the Foreign Affairs Ministry.
