Romania’s Bechtel Contract To Cease If Negotiations Fail – Transp Min
Berceanu presented, in a press conference, the negative effects of a possible termination of the contract sealed with Bechtel.
"If we do not sign the protocol with Bechtel, we will cease our collaboration with the company. If we terminate the contract, we will lose the trial and we will be forced to pay them EUR50-60 million. We will, afterwards, face construction delays, I will be dismissed from the Government. But, maybe the next minister will manage to ink a deal," Berceanu said.
The project for the construction of the Transylvania Highway, on the Brasov-Bors segment, began in 2004, based on a EUR2.2 billion contract granted to American company Bechtel.
Works were halted mid-2005, when authorities began reanalyzing the contracts concluded by the previous Government. Due to the cease of works, the
initially set 2012 deadline was pushed one year, but also the total value was changed.
