Romania’s Border With Hungary Tied To Highest Number Of Crimes In '08 – Police Report
Romania’s border with Hungary was the scene of the highest number of crimes last year, followed by the country’s borders with the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine, Romania’s General Inspectorate of the Border Police said Saturday in a statement.

Romanian police officers recorded 2,900 illegal actions at the border with Hungary, followed by 1,814 crimes at the border with the Republic Moldova and 1,698 at the border with Ukraine.
The number of infractions at the border with Bulgaria decreased by 4% on the year, but it increased nearly 12% at the border with Serbia, as 836 infractions were reported in 2008, against 745 in 2007.
“The highest illegal actions were reported for illegal migration, falsification, human trafficking and smuggling of goods, and the most “active” border in 2008 was the border with Hungary, followed by the borders with the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine,” the inspectorate said.
Last year, Romanian border police officers recorded countrywide 28,500 illegal actions, nearly 3% more than in 2007.
Of the total, 10,619 were criminal actions and 17,972 were contraventional actions.
Last year, border police officers applied fines totaling nearly 7,120,000 lei (EUR1=RON3.9852) and apprehended 564 wanted persons (560 Romanian citizens and four foreigners).
