Romanian Unions Urge Authorities To Raise Minimum Wage To RON705

Romanian unions call on authorities to raise the minimum wage for 2010 to 705 lei (EUR1=RON4.1721), which is the minimum salary set for public sector employees in the unitary pay law, which regulates public sector wages.

Unions called on the Presidency, Government, Parliament and the Labor Ministry not to give way to discrimination between the public and the private sector, by keeping the minimum wage at RON600 while paying at least RON750 to public workers, under the unitary pay law.

Unions said the different minimum wages would prompt the biggest social movements the country has seen after 1989 and would deepen the financial crisis, calling on the government to pass a resolution making the minimum wage RON705.

Labor Ministry state secretary Valentin Mocanu said late December that the minimum wage per economy would be kept at RON600, while the minimum guaranteed wage for the public sector will be at RON705 under the unitary pay law, despite consultations with social partners.
