Romania’s Econ Min Sustains State Monopoly In Power Transport

Romania’s Economy Minister Adriean Videanu on Thursday said he supports keeping the state monopoly in the electricity transport, as it ensures a non-discriminating access to energy for all companies.

„Only the state can make fast investments to strengthen the energy system and to interconnect it with neighboring countries,” Videanu told an energy seminar.

Despite the late reform, Romania’s power sector is still attractive for potential investors, he added.

„We are currently revising our energy strategy. The common market is the most important asset that the European Union offers us,” Videanu said.

According to him, Romania has many opportunities to develop its power sector, by exploiting renewable energy, the nuclear sector and the hydropower production.

Videanu also said the ministry will complete its plan to overhaul the country’s power sector by year-end.

The government announced plans to reorganize the country’s energy production by creating two national power holdings, which will include assets of all the state-run energy companies. Both companies should have been launched in July, but their setup was delayed by various legal challenges and a competition inquiry.
