Romania’s Education Reform Ten Years Ago Was Bad – President

The current decline the Romanian system of education is witnessing is the result of a bad reform enforced ten years ago, Romanian President Traian Basescu said Tuesday.

According to him, the current depreciation of the education is the result of a measure enacted while he was a member of the Government, “ten years ago”.

"I was in the Government when a big reform in the education system was dealt with, and I was convinced it was a stupid one for the mere reason that I had school-age children at that time. We see its results today, and if we take the correct action, we will have good results ten years from now,” Basescu said.

Between 1997 and 2000, the Education Ministry was led by Andrei Marga, member of the National Christian Democratic Peasants Party, at the time when three people occupied in turn the Prime Minister seat, Victor Ciorbea, Radu Vasile and Mugur Isarescu respectively.
