Romania’s Ethnic Hungarian Presidential Candidate Voted To Reform Over-Centralized State

Romania’s presidential candidate on behalf of the Hungarian minority party Kelemen Hunor said, after he cast his ballot, he voted for “change for the better” and for reform that puts people first.

He said he voted no on the referendum to make the Parliament single-chamber and downsize it to a maximum 300 lawmakers.

"I voted for change for the better, for Romania's future, to reform an over-centralized state and reform that puts people first," said Kelemen, whose party represents the interests of Romania's 1.4 million ethnic Hungarians.

The UDMR has been a strong advocate for regional autonomy in counties where the ethnic Hungarian population constitutes a majority.

Kelemen said he voted no on the referendum because he does not believe making the Parliament single-chamber is not a solution.

"I have another proposition for a two-chamber system, but making the Senate into a Chamber of Regions," Kelemen said.
