Romania’s Leftist Opp Leader To Quit If ‘08 Elections Return Low Scores

Romania’s leftist opposition leader Mircea Geoana told the BBC in an interview he would resign his leading position of the Social Democratic Party, or PSD, fails to win the 2008 local or legislative elections.

Geoana added he would have considered resigning if the social democrats had obtained a very low score in the recent elections for the European Parliament.

He said that after the referendum on the impeachment of President Traian Basescu, PSD came to hold 13% of voters’ options, adding that the party’s 23.11% score in EP elections was good.

“If I am not capable, as party leader, to secure my party’s victory in legislative elections, I will resign immediately. I found the party on the number one spot, and I plan to leave it on the number one spot,” Geoana said, adding the same goes for local elections.

“If we get a low score in local elections, but that is not the case, I will resign immediately, yes,” he said.
