Romania’s Foreign Ministry Cut 55 Jobs Amid Financial Restrictions – Minister

"We are talking about the first 55 jobs within diplomatic missions in Europe, but the ministry is bound to analyze the diplomatic performance of Romania’ missions worldwide," the minister said.

The minister, however, failed to say the percentage equivalent to the 55 jobs cut. "I couldn’t say a percentage because we made a strictly qualitative, not quantitative assessment with respect to further jobs that we shall adopt and propose in the upcoming period," he said.

"The ministry shall continue the restructuring process, which is not at all simple. I also hope the ministry staff will be able to understand the need of this reforming process and that the government will thoroughly assess the essential features of the diplomatic process that must never be alienated," Diaconescu said.

Diaconescu stressed the measure was taken in the wake of "financial restrictions,” adding the reforming process will be carried through, both politically and financially, by a highly skilled team.

Furthermore, he pointed out the Romanian Foreign Affairs Ministry is among the last in Europe in terms of funds assigned from the state budget, adding that, in its competitive relations with other partners, the ministry must be able to proudly represent Romania abroad the way all Romanians want.

Romanian President Traian Basescu on Thursday said on public radio RRA the Government should hurry and lay off many public servants working for the state apparatus, suggesting that 20% of them are “useless”.
